Sarah Helen Davis
there are players you photograph and then there are players you watch the whole crowd watch. sarah helen davis is the second kind.
standing behind the plate with my camera, i could hear people talking about her from the stands before she even stepped in the box. that kind of reputation doesn't come from nowhere. it comes from the countless hours she puts into perfecting her craft. and when she swings, every single one of those hours shows.
i had the opportunity to cover sarah helen at the 2026 USSSA Challenge Cup Major & C at Space Coast Complex in Viera, Florida (january 29 through february 1). she was representing Texas in the Women's Major division, and if you follow women's slowpitch at all, you already know the name. sarah helen plays for Derby Girls, the back to back USSSA Women's Major World Series champions (2024 and 2025), and is a member of the USA Softball Slowpitch Women's National Team. she is a Victus bat rep and a Smash It Sports rep, and she brings her fans inside the game on TikTok and Instagram where her following keeps growing because people can't help but want to watch her play.
and honestly, i get it. because that is exactly what the women's game does to you.
i have been around softball my whole life and the women's Major level is something different. these are elite athletes who travel across the country, compete at the highest level, and put in the kind of work that most people never see. and for a long time, most people never got to see the game itself either. that is starting to change, and players like sarah helen are a big part of why. when she posts from a tournament, her followers are not just watching highlights. they are seeing the hitting drills, the workouts, the behind the scenes effort that goes into being that player at the plate. they are learning the game and seeing what it actually takes to compete at the top of women's slowpitch. that matters to me as someone who shoots it, and it matters to the sport.
watching her in person only confirmed what the highlights already suggest. she is a problem at the plate every single time.

the tournament
Texas came to Viera with a target on their back. Women's Major is the highest division in the tournament, and this team did not come to play around.
Texas went 4-2 on the weekend, finishing 3rd place overall in the Women's Major division. here's how it broke down:
Jan 30 — Texas 10, New England 7 ✅
Jan 30 — Texas 17, Georgia 16 ✅ (one run game)
Jan 30 — Texas 10, Ohio 0 ✅
Jan 31 — Texas 11, Indiana 5 ✅
Jan 31 — Texas 8, Florida 17 ❌
Jan 31 — Texas 1, LA/MS 14 ❌
57 runs scored across six games. they put together four wins including a one run thriller against Georgia before running into Florida and LA/MS in the back half of the bracket.
third place at a Women's Major tournament is not a consolation prize. that is an elite finish in one of the most competitive divisions in the country.
